Scuttlebutt

by Frank Schlieve

Our condolences to the JACK FITZGERALD family, the OTTO KAUN family, the BOB MEYER family and the JIM PEAVLER family.  Jack passed away on February 23rd at the age of 91.  The funeral was held at St. Margaret Mary Church on March 1st.  Jack moved to an assisted living facility last year and the last several months were spent in a rehab hospital.  Jack spent most of his years at Acme Fast Freight.  He was ailing for many years but we did get together for lunch at many intervals.  Jack never did get over the sudden death of his wife Kaye.  Louise Kaun passed away at the age of 95.  She was preceded in death by her husband Otto who handled the rate duties at Lifschultz Fast Freight.  Betty Meyer passed away at the age of 91 in Ocala, Florida.  Her husband Bob was the Terminal Manager for Knox Motor Service for over thirty years.  Betty and Bob were married for a happy sixty-six years.  It was my pleasure to know these fine people since 1938 when Bob was in high school working for my Dad part time.  We spent many good times together and I was fortunate in working with Bob for over 27 years at Knox Motor.  Jim Peavler lost his wife Dottie last month after a long battle with cancer.  They were married for 48 wonderful years.

Most everyone knows that we are no longer printing our newsletter at every meeting of the retiree group.  We publish this when we have enough input to support a printing.  The reason for this has been lack of input, we need input so we can have output.  If you have any news items please call Frank Schlieve at 1-262-717-0220, if I am unable to take your call just leave your message on the answering machine.  The reason I mention this is the fact that this can also affect the Scuttlebutt item in the NOIBN.

While visiting Neenah, WI KURT SCHMITZ was involved in an accident involving his vehicle being hit by a train.  The vehicle was a total wreck but fortunately Kurt’s injuries were not life threatening.  FRANK KIRSCHBRAUN is still hampered by his ailment which requires much bed rest.  I know that bed rest is contrary to Frank’s normal life style.  RAY FRANK and GENE WIESNER attended the March luncheon of the retirees.  It was their first time and it was great to see them again.  Ray formerly handled traffic at John Oster and Gene handles traffic at Miller Brewery.  Both are in good health.  We all know that KAREN KACZMAREK    is an expert in the culinary department and wins blue ribbons every year at State Fair but after her vacation in Mexico she is talking about doing Latin dancing.  Karen enjoyed the beautiful weather and missed our bad snow storm.  FRED WALENDOWSKI has retired and we hope he will continue to join our activities.  We wish Fred a long, happy and healthy retirement.  RUSS SEARING is doing well after his rotator cuff surgery.  He is still having therapy but it is doing the right things.  BILL LEVINE had surgery on his back and is recuperating in a good manner.  RED SCHELLER talked to Bill and advised him that he will be having surgery on his knee May 21st.  Red has gotten his teeth in good shape but is still getting blood transfusions frequently.  The Scheller’s expect to be back in Milwaukee the middle of June.  BOB JOHNSON had knee surgery and is doing well although he still does not have a working hip.   A new address for DAVE CREASY, his new address is 3601 Wyoming Space # 178, Las Vegas, NV 89104.  Be sure to put the space number in the address.  RALPH BARFKNECHT and his wife no longer travel to Florida in the winter months.  Their health no longer allows them to do this.  JIM KRUEGER had cataract surgery on January 21st.  He is coming along fine.  Jim advises Joplin, MO is the shoe center of the USA.  That is where his wife finds the type of shoes that she likes.  JACK NEUSWANGER had hernia surgery on February 17th and all went well.  ROY SCHULTZ is doing great after suffering a heart attack.  He now has added a stint to his physical being.  JOHN BIALOCZNSKI suffered a heart attack which required installation of a pacemaker.  He is also making progress with his prostrate cancer.  BILL STIYER gave the invocation at the Recognition Dinner due to FATHER FRANK SAN FELIPPO’S illness.  DEL BRAHM and his wife Peg spent a few weeks at their home in Pahrump, Nevada.  JIM MCMAHON enjoyed his stay in Florida but ended up in the hospital with Pancreaticius after his return.  He is doing better but has to be careful with his diet.

A few thoughts:  The door to opportunity is marked “Push”.

Now and then it is good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy.

Duty is a matter of the mind.  Commitment is a matter of the heart.

Nothing is too much trouble for love.
