by Frank Schlieve

Our condolences to the KEN WILCOX family; the CHESTER ZONGOLOWICZ family; the ART ZUBE family; the STEVE TOTH family; the BOB BURNS family; the DICK BETHKE family; the BOB ILLIAM family; the JIM JOPPE family; the JIM MATHEWS family; the BOB STUELKE family; the DENNIS SHELLEY family; the GENO BONINO family; and the RUSS SEARING family.

Ken passed away on February 4th at the age of seventy years. Ken spent his career in motor carrier sales and was well recognized. Chet spent time in Milwaukee but worked in the AMC Kenosha plant where he served as Traffic Manager. Chet was eighty years old at the time of his death. Art spent many years with Western State Envelope where he retired, heading their traffic department. Steve was originally at Continental Premium Mart and later handled the traffic duties at Huffy. Steve was eighty-three when he passed away. Bob Burns spent over thirty-five years in the motor carrier industry covering both Minnesota and Wisconsin. Bob was gifted with a beautiful voice and entertained people in nursing homes for many years. Dick passed away on July 18th at the age of eighty-two. Dick spent most of his working years in the freight forwarding field. I did not know Bob Illiam, he lived in West Bend.

Jim was with Advance Transportation where he served as President for many years. He was a great person and loved sports. Jim Mathews was Traffic Manager at General Castings for many years and died very suddenly. Bob Stuelke worked in both the motor carriers' field and spent many years in industry serving in Milwaukee and Akron, Ohio. Dennis and his brother Al spent many years in the traffic department of a container company. They later started their own Motor Carrier Company. Geno was the operations manager at X-TRA Lease. He always had a smile and was well liked and respected. He was only forty-two years old. Russ Searling's father passed away after a long bout.

All of these people will be missed by their families and friends.

I was so glad to hear that BOB GLEASON is enjoying good health and that "FORE" is still his favorite word. I extended his greetings to the retiree group and they were very pleased to hear he is doing well. CHUCK MENTKOWSKI said that he and Bob were classmates at Marquette University. Congratulations to ERV CARLSON and his wife Jan as they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on January 17th. We hope they have many more healthy and happy ones. Erv worked for W.R. Peterson Forwarding Company.

The DICK HEILMANs spent the summer months at their home in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. Understand that Dick has hit the 90 mark. Best wishes go out to AL THONE who celebrated his 94th birthday in November. Al is at home recovering from a fall in which he fractured his pelvis. This happened at church just two weeks after his birthday. He is doing well in his recovery.

Congratulations are in order again for KAREN KACZMAREK, who again garnered several blue ribbons at the State Fair for her culinary arts. BOB EGGERMAN underwent surgery for cancer of the bladder. Please remember Bob and all our members who are ill. JACK FITZGERALD and NORM SCHOPP have lunch together frequently. Our thanks to CARL SMAIDA for keeping our rosters for TOTS up to date. Carl visits JERRY KRIER at the nursing home on a regular basis and recently brought DON PLOETZ to one of our luncheons. ART KUSCHMAN has not been able to get to the luncheons as his driver has been hospitalized. Art cannot see and is unable to drive. KEN SCHAEFER had surgery but is coming along in a satisfactory manner. Our sympathies to the PAUL MOORHOUSE family. Paul passed away recently and will be missed by his many friends. AL LEHMAN is back on the go after having open heart surgery. Can't keep a good man down.

DICK STEWART is in a nursing home in Dousman, Wisconsin which is run by the Masonic Order. Jan lives in a nearby apartment and gets to see Dick on a daily basis. WAYNE EDMARK is now living in San Antonio, Texas. His son lives in the same location and it was their wish to be close to him. Talked to JERRY NEIDINGER recently, and he was telling me about the record snow fall in Erie, Pennsylvania and at the same time was inquiring as to whether RICK FRANCO had invested in snow tires.

The FRITZ THORNs took an extended vacation and visited Europe and Ireland. They had a wonderful time. ED SONNEN is in a nursing home suffering with Alzheimer's disease. The HANK HOFMANNs vacationed in the Canadian Rockies and in the state of Washington. They said the sights were very beautiful. Congratulations to JOHN BIALOZYNSKI and Liz on their 50th wedding anniversary. We wish them many more healthy and happy ones.

Just found out that WOODY OETLINGER passed away in December of 2003. Woody was a very popular figure in both Racine and Milwaukee. FRANK KIRSCHBRAUN visited EDDIE FRANKEN who is in a nursing home. Frank says that Ed is good but his physical condition has gone down. TOM KRITNER's wife Judy had surgery on her back. She is undergoing therapy and is doing well in her recovery. Congrats to the ROY SCHULTZs who will celebrate their 57th wedding anniversary on May 17th. Our best wishes for many more happy ones.

JIM MCMAHON is spending the winter months in Florida. JIM FOULKS is now living on the northeast part of Milwaukee. Jim has been unable to get to our luncheons because he cannot drive. It was nice to see BOB JOHNSON, RED SCHELLER, and BILL LEVINE at one of our recent luncheons. They all look in good shape but driving does become a problem. JACK NEUSWANGER advises that his golf game is improving with age. EARL NORMAND and Doris are having a rough time health wise. Doris is having a problem seeing and Earl is having a problem walking. JERRY SCHMIDT has had a problem with his leg and is having a problem getting around to his many favorite locals. Nice to see GEORGE KELLY recently, looks like he is enjoying good health. CHUCK GOLWITZER does not get to see many of his old Motor Transport friends.

I will leave you with a couple of thoughts:

  • The happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything.
  • To break a bad habit, drop it.
  • If you always tell the truth, you'll never have to remember what you said.
  • It doesn't cost anything to be polite.
  • The law of the 5 P's - Prior - Preparation - Prevents - Poor - Performance
