The Healthy Corner

In a new study people with heart failure who took up waltzing breathed better, exercised longer and generally felt better.  Dancing boosted heart health just as much as exercise.  Dancing and exercise both helped heart failure patients to utilize their oxygen more efficiently, thereby allowing them to exercise more without running out of breath.

The summer heat can affect us profoundly, in body and mind.  In worst cases, high heat and humidity can be deadly.  Heat stroke victims are often near death before they seek medical treatment.  The cause of heat stroke is simple:  being too hot for too long.  When heat stroke victims are wheeled into the ER they are cooled by stripping off their clothes, blowing air over them with fans and bathing them with lukewarm water.  The elderly are most at risk for heat stroke so check on friends and relatives during extreme heat, take them to a movie, out for lunch or linger a while in the ice cream section at your local grocery store to give them air conditioned relief.

OK, so you have been at the baseball game and sat through nine innings on a sunny day, did you remember your sunscreen? No, well here are a few remedies for the all too painful sunburn.
· Home remedy, cool milk compresses, the protein in milk gives skin a protective coat that prevents water evaporation.
· Take ibuprofen every four hours until the redness goes away. It reduces the inflammation of your red skin.
· Use a topical ointment with Aloe to soothe the skin.
· Drink green tea or pomegranate juice, both have soothing anti-inflammatory benefits.

Exercise May Cut Risk of Dementia

Exercising in middle age may help ward off dementia and Alzheimer’s disease decades later. There is growing evidence that physical exercise does not have to be strenuous or even require a major time commitment. It is most effective when done regularly and in combination with a "brain-healthy" diet, mental activity and social interaction. The doctors know that physical exercise is essential for maintaining good blood flow to the brain as well as to encourage the development of new brain cells.
