The Healthy Corner

With retirement can come many new worries, including financial concerns and thoughts of how to spend each day.  Here are some suggestions on how to enjoy a happy, healthy retirement.

  • Create a list of goals you would like to accomplish

  • Try new activities

  • Work on friendships, both strengthening old ones and making new ones

  • Schedule at least 30 minutes of physical activity you enjoy into every day

  • Get involved in your community, take classes or volunteer

  • Get a pet

  • Take up a hobby you’ve been interested in such as painting or music.

 

Junk Food?  Maybe Not…….

Pork Rinds:  These puffy snacks are literally cut from pigskin, and then they are deep-fried.  A one ounce serving contains zero carbohydrates, 17 grams of protein and 9 grams of fat.  This is more protein and less fat than in a serving of potato chips and the pork rind fat is unsaturated fat and most of that is oleic acid, the same healthy fat found in Olive oil.

Fresh Air

When was the last time you had your air ducts and your furnace and AC cleaned?  If you can’t remember, it is time to do it now.  Every time you run your air conditioner or furnace pollutants are re-circulated throughout your air tight home, contaminating the air you breathe also aggravating asthma and allergies. 

 

Moisture in Your Home 

Too much moisture in your home can lead to mold and mildew problems, exposure can lead to cause respiratory problems, headaches, watery eyes, rashes and other reactions.  Here are some suggestions to clear mold from your home:

  • Flush the air out 2 or 3 times a day.  Open all doors and windows and let the fresh air circulate throughout the home

  • Ventilate the kitchen and bathroom with an exhaust fan.

  • Keep shower curtain or shower door open after bathing to increase air circulation.

  • Make sure the dryer vents freely to the outside.

  • Heat all rooms in your home to keep moisture from forming on the walls and other surfaces of unheated areas.
