Researchers have demonstrated that short term memory skills and reaction times are heightened after consuming caffeine.  The researchers were also fascinated to see, on a functional MRI test, that coffee drinkers showed increased activity in the parts of the brain that control working memory and attention.

 

Attitude is Everything as we Age

Optimism and an ability to “roll with the punches” may be the keys to successful aging, a new study suggests.  500 people between the ages of 60 and 98 years of age were asked what constitutes successful aging.  The findings suggest that physical health is not the best indicator of successful aging, a good attitude is.

 

Summer Fun – Summer Hazards

Heat exhaustion, heat stroke and heat cramps can strike suddenly if your body is exposed to high temperatures for an extended period of time.  Remember to:

1. Drink enough fluids in hot weather to rehydrate your body

2.  Wear light-colored, loose fitting clothing made of breathable fabric  

3.  Exercise in the early morning or late evening when it is cooler

4.  Wear sunscreen

5.  Allow yourself time to get used to the higher temperatures

6.  Talk to your doctor if you have a chronic medical condition or are taking certain medications.  They might affect your ability to work out doors in hot weather.

Tummy Grumble

 That hunger pang you have immediately after rolling out of bed may not be hunger at all.  Many people mistake dehydration for hunger and fill up on food before slaking their thirst.  Next time your tummy grumbles, reach for a big glass of H2O and hydrate your body first.
