Belly Fat in Men

 

If you are carrying a few extra pounds whether in the form of belly fat, love handles, a beer gut or a potbelly you are not alone.  In recent years the number of overweight people has increased dramatically worldwide.  Two-thirds of American men are overweight or obese.  Having the excess belly weight can lead to a number of health related problems such as diabetes, some types of cancers, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, heart disease and insulin resistance to name a few.  To lose the weight and keep it off, you have to get regular exercise, this means being active at least most days of the week,

Healthy Aging
 

Emotional and mental vitality are closely tied to physical vitality – just as your mind has powerful effects on your body so your physical state affects how you feel and think.  Social contact can also make a big difference in how you feel.  Protect or improve your emotional health by staying in touch with friends, family and your community.  Whether physically healthy, or ill, people who feel connected to others are more likely to thrive than those who are socially isolated.

 

 

 


The Anti-Cancer Diet
 

You can lower your risk of cancer, the best way to start:  Pile some delicious food on your fork, chew, swallow, repeat.  It turns out a healthy diet can help to over ride any cancer-prone genes you might have at work in your body.  Add whole grains to your diet.  Oatmeal with cinnamon for breakfast or brown rice with a chicken stir fry for dinner.  Add spices to your cooking.  Did you know in India where they use ginger, garlic, cumin and turmeric the breast cancer rate is 5 times lower than in the United States?  The best for last, add a dark chocolate candy bar to your diet.  Researchers have found a compound in the dark chocolate fights fast growing cancers, such as colorectal cancer. 

 

Why do processed foods contain so much sodium?
 

Salt helps prevent spoiling by drawing moisture out of the food so bacteria won’t grow.  Salt also kills existing bacteria that might cause spoiling.  To reduce sodium in your diet eat more fresh foods, such as fresh fruits, and vegetables, lean meats, poultry and fish.  Select unsalted nuts, seeds pretzels and other snacks.  Use herbs and spices rather than salt to season your food.
